The 1940s Shenandoah Police Station

In the late 1940s, the police station was located at 107 S. Jardin St. on the second floor of the Columbia Fire House building. That building is now the home of the museum of the Schuylkill Historical Fire Society ( http://www.462fd.com/SHFS)

I remember going in through that door on the right hand side of the building and going up the stairs to the second floor. I asked a policemen who was there, about one of the guns that was on display. I was curious because it looked like a short shotgun but had a very large bore. When asked about it, he said that it was used to shoot elephants. There was a lot of laughter from other men in the room that I did not understand at the time.

Years later, I found out that these "guns" were used to "shoot" tear gas canisters.
