I was in Sinope from October 1957-58 and it wasn't much fun! Hard times living in tents with the cold, dampness and such.
The picture of Hippy had to be taken in the late 60s or early 70s. When I was a Det 4, the only real attraction ---antenna wise was the big Kennedy dish/slice that was cemented into the ground looking out to the Black sea. Out on the point, we had a TRD 4 DF site that did diddle and an acoustic system with its stuff dug in the ground, and the ops building was a shamble!. When I was back at Sinope in 1972 on an inspection team, Hippy was basically dead-closed down and in the other opns building was mostly vacant.
Picture of me on one of my escort duties bringing up another convoy of EW equipment to Sinope. This picture was taken up in the mountains just before you start the windy trip up and down to Sinope. Oh! Did I ever tell you that myself and another jerk from the site were the first ones to drive tractor trailers rigs over the mountains! We did this several times bringing in food to the site and stocked the place up for winter. PICTURE
This is a picture of the original mess hall at the site. PICTURE
This one was taken as I walked down the road near the mess hall and caught two KPs unloading "stuff" from a 3/4 ton truck. PICTURE
Inside the mess hall with the Turk KPs in the background! I guess I was lucky-as I was selected by the First SGt. and Lt. Passario the S-4 to become the local liaison with the Turks. Mainly due my speaking the lingo and ability of being able to cope with the Turks. Eventually. I went off to Det 4-1 in Ankara, and served as the site support arm in Ankara arranging for food, people and such to get to the site. PICTURE
This is a picture of a "pee tube house" out behind the messhall area. One time-walking down the road there is a really windy day, I heard a scream and noticed the pee house going end over end down the hill---with the occupant inside of it!! PICTURE

Received an emergency call from the site that they were running out of fuel oil for the big 100KW Generators. Borrowed an Air Force fuel truck and made about four or five trips to the site in a weeks time--hauling fuel. When I turned the truck into the Air Force Motor Pool in Ankara they wanted to know why the truck was in such bad shape? It seemed that the truck was in real bad shape as the brakes were gone, the horn button was broke and the truck had many small -large dents. I explained that I hit several sheep and some of the dents were caused by rocks hitting the truck which came from the mad farmer. The brakes and horn just wore out due to the nice roads over the mountains and a lot of praying. Finally the Black Sea Steamer came in and brought the much needed oil. PICTURE
