Hi Bill, this is Derrick Fowler, I was an MP (SP4) stationed on the Hill from Oct. 84 to Dec. 85.
Here are a few pics of me and the Hill, please feel free to post them.
The pic titled "Sinop" is me with a Turkish family somewhere downtown Sinop.
In the pic titled "Istanbul" is me in front of the St. Sophia Church in Istanbul
and the pic "party" is me and some of the MPs at my going away party..... anyone remember the turtles we would wear when we got short?? I still have mine.
The woman in the foreground of the "party" photo was an American civilian, her
father worked for DOD and he got her a job at the club, the other woman was an MP.
Some children, strange when you think these kids are in their late 20s, early 30s now.

As to my recollections of life "on the Hill", what stands out most was the harsh winter of 84/85. Hippodrome got snowed in and I, along with the "Hippy" crew, got stranded out there for 4 days. I was an MP so that meant I was stuck in that little gate shack alone for the whole time, claustrophobic to say the least.
I remember SSG Wootens that worked in the EMD would come out and bring me 1 MRE to eat, that's right ONE a day for 4 days. He also relieved me twice for about 6 hours at a time to get some sleep. He was a really good guy though I never got to know him as well as I would have liked.
One of our main duties as MPs was to round up all the stray cows on post everyday and herd them out of either the Main or Hippy gates. As soon as the MPs were out of sight, the Turkish gate guard would let them all back on post, guess he got a kick out of seeing us trying to herd cattle all day. From: "derrick fowler" <dfowler503@wideopenwest.com>

Subject: MP duties
Our duties mostly consisted of entry control at the main gate as well as main ops and Hippy. We also provided the law enforcement for the post but being such a small post not much, other than the odd club fight, ever happened.
The only real crime that happened while I was there was a statutory rape case.
Some guy in the USAIC company brought his family over without the Army's approval (actually, though discouraged, this was not an uncommon practice while I was there). The guy had a 14 or 15 year old daughter and one of the guys in his company was caught (by the girl's mother) in a compromising situation with her.
The soldier in question spent 4 months in our tiny cell at the MP station awaiting his Court Martial in Italy. I remember he was on 24 hour suicide watch which meant we had to work 12 hour shifts, 4 hours watching him and 8 hours our normal duty. We were not allowed to speak to him and he was not allowed to speak to us, we would just sit in front of the cell watching him and we were supposed to record anything he did or said. After 4 hours of just sitting and watching this guy, I would be nearly out of my head with boredom, imagine what he went through, 24 hours a day for 4 months! I later heard he was sentenced to 8 years at the DB in Leavenworth! We didn't have a problem with any stray dogs on post, only stray cows ha ha .
The only dog on post I remember when I was there was one they kept out at the Hippodrome called "bob dog". I think there had been another dog there but it had died shortly before I got there.
