Tom Gawlak's Sinop Photo Page

TUSLOG DET. 4 1966-1967

This Pic is of Det 4 Mess Hall & Quadrangle. To the right of the mess was barracks and also to left. Behind me and out of pic was more barracks and Post Office. PICTURE

Looking west over toward Sinop, the smallest building would be the second floor of Hq & Hq Svc Co. Barracks. To the left is the NCO Club, to the right is the EM Club, To the far right is the PX. Behind me would be the quadrangle shown in the previous pic. PICTURE

A 1966 Fall Excursion to "Bird Shit Rock"
One fall day Don Pylman and myself were standing at the far eastern end of the hill, looking down at "Bird Shit Rock" (pic 1).  Don, being the adventurous type, said, "Hey Tom!, Why don't we rent a boat and see Bird Shit Rock up close.  I, being insane said, "Sure, sounds cool."  I must interject that "Bird Shit Rock" got it's name from the fact that it's covered with sea gulls who obviously make their deposits there.  So we went into Sinop and rented a boat. Don (pic 2, top right) said, "Tom, did you ever hear the story of Bird Shit Rock?"  I said,"No."  "Well according to Greek Mythology," Don said, "When Ulysis was running from the Cyclops, the Cyclops picked up a huge stone and hurled it at Ulysis ship."  Here is where it lodged. (pic 3, lower left).  I'm not going to say any more about our conversation, but I alluded to the fact that Don should pay a visit to the dispensary. To show you the enormity of Bird Shit Rock (pic 4, lower right) is just a small left hand corner of pic 3. Almost a tiny island in itself.

Here is our Christmas Party on the hill. As you can see, everyone was very unhappy. I will try to give some of the names of the guys. Top left pic shows me in a brown plaid shirt and behind me standing is Dennis Cuccio <Sorry about the spelling of your names guys but it has been 30+ years. Behind Dennis, also standing is a guy by the name of Pruden. Top right pic in the lower left corner is Bernie Carr (Baby Cakes). Behind him is Rance Smith. Standing next to Dennis in this pic, with the Bopher (Turkish cigerette) in his mouth, is our Turkish waiter "Half Shot" (I never did get to know his real name). This poor guy got a lot of grief from us guys. Lower left pic shows the band; the only name I remember here is Dennis the drummer. Last but not least is our great post CO. This guy was just like one of the enlisted men. Obviously he knew how to have a good time. Yes that's an Esek (Turkish for Donkey) he is riding. Great party, we had everything except dancing girls. Oh well.....Sigh!
