Mail to: roses1939@hotmail.com My basic training was done at Fort Carson, CO in March of "58". From there I was sent to Fort Devens, Ayer, MA and from there to Fort Lee, VA for Supply Handlers School and again back to Devens.
Day after Thanksgiving, November of "59" I was sent to Sinop, Turkey. I stopped in Shannon, Ireland, Hamburg, Germany and spent over night in Istanbul, Turkey. Flying from there to Ankara.
Went from Ankara in a Deuce and a half heading for Sinop. Arriving in the dark and jumping off the back of the truck I landed knee deep in mud.
What an eye opener that was for my next 13 months. After Guard duty I ended up bunking in the Supply Hut with Leon Myhre. My tour of duty was extended so that I could be discharged 90 days early.
I was discharged in December "60" at Fort Dix, NJ Just days before Christmas. I soon left for my home town of Swea City, Iowa. After 7 years back home I went to work as a Federal Food Inspector and I was sent to Providence, RI where I stayed for 30 years.
Rose and I have retired to a small town of 300 population in Morganton, GA.
