A - The 'taxi' that took us to and from downtown Sinop in 1962.

B - New guys on the way from Ankara to Sinop. 1962

C - My mother sent a box of toys for me to "give to the children of Turkey". I, in turn, found it much more natural to place such toys around certain people as they slept, and then take their pictures - and send the pictures to their wives, girlfriends or family.
Shown is Neil Hines from Rutherfordton, N.C.

D - Spending another long night in my room - waiting to leave. I vowed never again to spend time in 'group isolation'.

. . . . . . . I am in the process of putting a lot of pix through the scanner and into .jpg files. I'll send you some in the near future.

Till then, here is a little story I wrote many years ago, not long after I left Sinop. It's called Yeni. There are those of us who will understand the meaning, and those who won't.

Which are you?

Yeni

My, my, look at that big grin. You really think you're going to like it here, don't you? And sure, why not? All those poor guys you knew at school were sent to two year tours overseas, and you lucked out got one this one which is just a year in length.

Sure, what's one year? Of course it will pass just as quickly as the last one did in the states. Sure it will.

By the way, what do you have against a two year tour overseas? Someone you know waiting for you? Oh yes, she sure is cute. And her age? But of course she looks eighteen. She sure does. She's not one to wait for anything or anybody, but she'll wait for you? No, I wouldn't question your word. If you say she'll wait, she'll wait.

You look like you really go for this girl. My, that strong, huh? That's a pretty strong statement to make, you know. My life is worth quite a bit to me....

Enough idle talk about your girl. Of course she'll wait. You can probably depend on getting five or more letters each mail call. Anyway, I don't have too much time left, so I'll show you a bit more around post.

Now this, my new friend, is a place for you to know about. This is our water tower. For a young fellow like you, this tower might come in real handy one day. No, I can't really explain that last statement, maybe you'll find out one day.

Moving on, over here is.....
