Great memories. I was the OIC Hippodrome Oct '74 til I left in Nov '75. Only had to work the second year til about July, when we were shut down as payback for congress cutting off Turkish foreign aid.
Some of my watch officers were John Bezy, Al Noel, Koneta Saum. Larry Arrol was the ops company CO, Vern Cook the 1SG and the pilots were Jim Skelly, Mark Lowrance, Vaughn (?) Brown and Jake "Maddog" Rubik. Remember Maj Seelig and his finance oficer Leo Schenone (sp). When I got off midz, he and I would drink beer in BOQ and blast Pink Floyd The Wall off the walls. Also remember the S-4 who went hunting with the Turks and brought back some really OLD ducks. He also brought back a wild boar once, had to marinate it for three days in cheap (50 cent at your friendly class VI) Yugoslav red wine. I volunteered to cook them, but had to boil them first.
First CO while I was there was John Heiss, second one was Frank Norris. Fred Gesin was the S-3 and LTC Costanzo was the Deputy. I have some officer "class" pictures I can send and some others of the site.
To the e-mail asking about Mark the wonder dog, he was still alive when I was there and there was another younger Hippy dog, appropriately named "Yeni" dog.
Does anyone remember the Brits "Viking Club" on the top floors of the Yeni Hotel?
This had gotten too long, but the site brought back lots of memories. I retired in '94 after 26 years and work with 702d MI at Ft. Gordon as a contractor. I work with another Sinopean DJ Liechty I think he was there late '88 or so. Last bit, I do remember the baynami list, almost couldn't get out after they took over because of the records being lost.Jay Waldman
